INSiGHT Scans Explained: Seeing Inside Your Child's Nervous System
When most people think of chiropractic care, they think of adjustments — someone working on your spine, maybe some popping, hopefully some relief. What they don't expect is technology that can actually measure what's happening inside the nervous system before a single adjustment is made.

Here's what the scans actually measure, what the results mean, and why we believe every child (and adult) should know how their nervous system is functioning.
What Are INSiGHT Scans?
INSiGHT scans are a suite of neurological assessment tools developed by CLA (Chiropractic Leadership Alliance) and used by thousands of chiropractic offices worldwide — including practices that care for NASA astronauts. They're non-invasive, completely painless, and take only a few minutes to complete.
The technology measures the function of the autonomic nervous system — the part of your nervous system that controls everything happening beneath the surface: heart rate, digestion, immune function, stress response, sleep, and more.
In other words, these scans let us see things that a physical exam alone never could.
The Three Components of an INSiGHT Scan
1. Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
HRV measures the variation in time between heartbeats — which sounds simple, but it's actually one of the most powerful indicators of nervous system health available. A high HRV means the nervous system is flexible, adaptive, and resilient. A low HRV means the nervous system is under stress and struggling to adapt.
For children especially, HRV tells us how much reserve their nervous system has — how well they can handle the daily demands of school, social situations, sensory input, and physical activity without becoming overwhelmed.
2. Surface EMG (sEMG)
Surface electromyography measures the electrical activity in the muscles along the spine. These muscles are controlled directly by the nervous system, so abnormal tension patterns reveal exactly where spinal stress and interference are occurring.
This is the scan that shows us the "map" of your child's spine — where the tension is held, how symmetrical their muscle function is, and which areas need the most attention. For kids with colic, torticollis, ADHD, SPD, or behavioral challenges, this scan is often eye-opening for parents who can finally see their child's nervous system stress in a visual, measurable way.
3. Thermography
Thermography measures temperature differences on either side of the spine. Your nervous system regulates skin temperature through the autonomic nervous system — so asymmetries in temperature indicate areas where the nervous system is not communicating properly.
Think of it like a thermal map of nervous system function. When both sides of the spine show even, balanced temperatures, the nervous system is communicating well. When we see asymmetries — especially at consistent levels — it tells us there's interference at those segments.
What the Results Look Like
After the scans are complete, we generate a report that shows your child's nervous system function in a clear, visual format — color-coded and easy to understand. We walk every family through their results in detail so you know exactly what we found, what it means for your child's health, and what we recommend.
This isn't something we file away and never mention again. We re-scan regularly throughout your child's care to track progress objectively. You'll be able to see the nervous system improving over time — in real data, not just how your child feels.
