The “Terrible Twos”... Or a Nervous System Learning How to Handle a Very Big World?

One minute your toddler is happily eating a banana. The next, they're sobbing because you broke the banana in half—even though they specifically asked you to break it in half.

Welcome to toddlerhood.

We hear phrases like “terrible twos,” “threenager,” “dramatic” and “strong-willed” all the time. And yes, toddlers can be a lot.

But what if we stopped looking at every meltdown as bad behavior and started remembering just how much development is happening underneath it?

Your Toddler Is Changing FAST

Between roughly one and three years old, children are becoming dramatically more independent. They're walking, running, climbing, talking, exploring, making choices and realizing that they're their own little person.

That's a lot happening inside one tiny human.

And while their desire for independence is exploding, their ability to communicate, wait, reason and regulate big emotions is still developing.

Sometimes the feelings are simply bigger than the skills available to handle them.

A Meltdown Isn't Always Manipulation

Imagine knowing exactly what you want but not having the language to explain it. Or being exhausted but not understanding why everything suddenly feels harder. Or being told “no” when you've only recently discovered that you can have an opinion in the first place.

That's toddlerhood.

This doesn't mean parents shouldn't have boundaries. Children need boundaries, predictability and guidance.

It means we can hold a boundary without assuming a struggling child is intentionally trying to make our lives difficult.

Instead of only asking, “How do I stop this behavior?” sometimes it helps to ask, “What is making this moment so difficult for my child?”

Regulation Is Learned in Relationship

Little kids aren't born knowing how to calmly say, “Mother, I'm experiencing significant disappointment regarding your decision not to let me lick the grocery cart.”

They cry.

They yell.

They collapse onto the floor.

They need adults to help them gradually learn what to do with big emotions.

So when your toddler loses it, your calm presence matters.

That doesn't mean giving them everything they want. You can calmly hold the boundary while still helping them through the emotion.

Their Environment Matters Too

When a child seems especially dysregulated, zoom out.

How did they sleep? Have they eaten? Have they been inside all day? Has the routine changed? Has there been more screen time than usual? Have they had opportunities to run, climb, play and explore?

Sometimes supporting a child looks surprisingly simple: breakfast, sunshine, movement, connection, play, a predictable bedtime and a little less rushing.

Where Does Pediatric Chiropractic Fit?

At Kingdom Chiropractic, we love caring for kids because we aren't interested only in whether something hurts.

Our chiropractic lens considers the spine, movement and nervous system while also asking about the child's bigger picture: sleep, development, activity, routines and the patterns parents are noticing.

That doesn't mean a chiropractic adjustment is a treatment for tantrums or behavioral conditions.

It means we care about the whole child.

Pediatric chiropractic should complement—not replace—your child's pediatric healthcare. Developmental or behavioral concerns deserve appropriate evaluation, particularly if your child has lost skills they previously had or isn't meeting expected developmental milestones.

Maybe They Aren't Giving You a Hard Time

Maybe they're having a hard time.

There will still be boundaries. There will still be consequences. There will still be days when you wonder how someone so small can create so much chaos.

But toddlerhood looks different when we remember that we're not simply managing behavior.

We're helping build a human.

And that little human is learning how to move, communicate, connect, handle disappointment and make sense of an enormous world—all at the same time.

“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” — Proverbs 22:6

At Kingdom Chiropractic, we believe childhood deserves curiosity, connection and care—not fear.

Even when somebody is screaming because you handed them the exact snack they requested.

Healthy families start with a strong foundation.

You don't have to wait until something feels “wrong” to start paying attention to your family's health. At Kingdom Chiropractic, we use INSiGHT neurological scans, specific chiropractic analysis, and personalized care to look beyond symptoms and better understand how your nervous system is functioning.
