Your Baby Isn't Giving You a Hard Time—Their Nervous System May Be Having a Hard Time

You've fed them.

Changed them.

Burped them.

Rocked them.

Swaddled them.

Walked around the house for what feels like the hundredth time.

And your baby is still upset.

Maybe they seem perfectly content in someone's arms but become uncomfortable the second they're put down. Maybe they frequently arch backward. Maybe tummy time is an immediate battle. Maybe they consistently prefer looking one direction. Maybe settling for sleep feels like an Olympic event.

And eventually, exhausted parents start asking:

"What am I doing wrong?"

At Kingdom Chiropractic, we'd encourage you to ask a different question:

What is my baby's body communicating right now?

Because crying is communication.

And sometimes, looking at the bigger picture—including development, feeding, movement, environment and the nervous system—can help parents better understand what their baby may need.

Your Newborn Just Went Through an Incredible Transition

Think about your baby's world before birth.

Warm. Dark. Contained. Supported. Constantly moving with mom.

Then birth happens.

Suddenly there's gravity, clothing, diapers, car seats, feeding, digestion, temperature changes, lights, noises, new positions and an entirely different sensory environment.

That's a massive transition.

And your baby's nervous system is involved in continuously receiving and responding to information from this brand-new world.

This doesn't mean every fussy baby has a "nervous system problem." Crying and fussiness are normal parts of infancy, and persistent or unusual symptoms should always be discussed with your pediatric healthcare provider.

But it does mean we're interested in more than simply stopping the crying.

We want parents to become curious about patterns.

Look at the Whole Baby, Not Just the Symptom

When parents bring their babies into Kingdom Chiropractic, we don't believe in looking at one behavior in isolation.

Instead, we may ask questions like:

How did pregnancy go?

How was baby positioned during pregnancy?

How did labor progress?

Was the birth vaginal or Cesarean?

Were forceps or vacuum assistance used?

How is feeding going?

Does baby prefer turning their head to one side?

How does baby respond to tummy time?

How does baby move their arms and legs?

Are there noticeable asymmetries?

How are they sleeping?

How is digestion?

How easily do they settle?

We're looking for patterns because your baby is one interconnected little human—not a collection of unrelated symptoms.

What Does the Nervous System Have to Do With It?

Your nervous system is the body's communication network.

Your baby's brain is constantly receiving sensory information from the world around them and coordinating responses to that information.

Touch. Movement. Sound. Light. Temperature. Body position. Internal sensations.

All of that information has to be processed.

And infancy is an extraordinary period of neurological and physical development.

This is one reason we love educating parents about creating opportunities for babies to experience healthy, age-appropriate movement.

Where Does Pediatric Chiropractic Fit?

This is where we want to be very clear.

Pediatric chiropractic is not a replacement for your pediatrician.

We love collaborative care. Your pediatrician plays an essential role in monitoring your baby's growth, health and development.

Our role at Kingdom Chiropractic is different.

We're chiropractors with a special interest in pregnancy, infants, children and families, and our chiropractic evaluations look at the spine, pelvis, movement and nervous-system-related function through a chiropractic lens.

Our approach is intentionally individualized.

An infant isn't a miniature adult.

A newborn shouldn't be evaluated or cared for exactly like a 35-year-old.

And the amount of force appropriate for an infant is very different from what may be used with an adult.

Parents should always feel comfortable asking a provider:

Why are you doing this?

What are you assessing?

What does the evidence show?

What should I expect?

You deserve answers.

For the Mama Who Needs to Hear This...

God entrusted this child to you, but He never asked you to know everything.

Motherhood has a way of exposing just how little control we actually have.

You can research.

Prepare.

Pray.

Choose carefully.

And still encounter things you didn't expect.

Our encouragement to moms is not to parent from fear.

Stay curious.

Ask questions.

Seek wisdom.

Pay attention to your baby.

And remember that your baby's body was created with an extraordinary capacity to grow, develop and adapt.

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb." — Psalm 139:13
