Webster Technique Isn't a “Breech Baby Technique”—So What Is It?
You've probably heard it before:
“Baby is breech? Go find a Webster chiropractor!”
And if you're pregnant, you may have even been told that a chiropractor can “flip your baby.”
But here's something that surprises a lot of moms:
That's actually not what the Webster Technique is.
And at Kingdom Chiropractic, we think understanding what Webster actually focuses on makes the conversation about chiropractic during pregnancy much more valuable.
First: What Is the Webster Technique?
The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment commonly associated with prenatal chiropractic care.
According to the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), the goal of Webster is to address sacral and sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction and improve neuro-biomechanical function of the sacral and pelvic region.
In simpler terms?
We're looking at Mom.
Her pelvis.
Her sacrum.
Her movement.
Her biomechanics.
And how her body is adapting to pregnancy.
We are not manually moving the baby into another position.
In fact, the ICPA specifically recommends that chiropractors avoid describing Webster as a “breech turning” technique because that isn't its objective.
Pregnancy Changes A LOT
Think about everything your body has to accomplish during pregnancy.
Your belly expands.
Your center of gravity changes.
Your posture adapts.
Your pelvis is supporting increasing weight.
Hormonal changes affect ligaments throughout the body.
And somehow, while all of this is happening, you're still expected to work, exercise, sleep, chase toddlers, unload groceries and function like a normal human being.
Your body is adapting every single day.
That's one reason we don't think prenatal chiropractic should begin only when something starts hurting.
At Kingdom Chiropractic, we're interested in how Mom is functioning and adapting throughout pregnancy, not simply whether she currently has back pain.
So Why Is Webster Always Associated With Breech Babies?
This is where things get misunderstood.
The Webster Technique focuses on the pregnant person's sacrum and pelvis, not on manipulating or repositioning the baby.
Baby positioning is a medical and obstetric issue that should be discussed with your OB or midwife.
The chiropractic conversation is different.
Rather than asking:
“How do we turn this baby?”
Our chiropractic question is:
“How is Mom's pelvis functioning?”
Those are two very different questions.
And that distinction matters.
What Does Being “Webster Certified” Actually Mean?
Webster Certification means a chiropractor has completed additional training through the ICPA specifically involving the Webster Technique.
At Kingdom Chiropractic, that training complements the way we already approach pregnancy: looking beyond symptoms and paying attention to the relationship between the spine, pelvis, movement and nervous system.
Pregnancy isn't an illness.
It's one of the most incredible physiological processes the human body can undergo.
And we believe moms deserve providers who understand the unique changes happening during that season.
“But I Feel Fine. Do I Still Need a Chiropractor?”
This is one of our favorite questions.
Because chiropractic doesn't have to begin with:
“Something hurts.”
Maybe you feel incredible.
Maybe you're working out.
Maybe you're sleeping well.
Maybe pregnancy has been surprisingly easy.
Great!
Our philosophy isn't to wait for your body to scream before you start paying attention to it.
It's similar to how you approach so many other parts of pregnancy.
You don't eat nourishing foods only when something goes wrong.
You don't take prenatal vitamins only when you feel deficient.
You don't attend prenatal appointments only when you're concerned.
You're supporting your body throughout the process.
For families who choose chiropractic care during pregnancy, we approach it with that same wellness mindset.
Your Nervous System Is Adapting Too
Pregnancy isn't simply a structural change.
Your entire body is undergoing enormous physiological adaptation.
Your nervous system is constantly receiving information and coordinating responses throughout your body.
That's why our office is intentionally nervous-system focused.
We're not interested only in chasing the symptom of the week.
We're interested in the person experiencing it.
Because the pregnant woman walking into our office isn't simply carrying a baby.
She's becoming a mother. Her body is changing. Her routines are changing. Her priorities are changing. Her family is changing.
And sometimes, her relationship with her own body is changing too.
Preparing for Birth Without Trying to Control Birth
There's an important distinction here.
Preparation doesn't equal control.
You can choose your birth team. Learn about birth. Move your body. Eat well. Receive prenatal care. See a chiropractor. Pray. Prepare. And birth may still unfold differently than you imagined.
We don't believe chiropractic guarantees a particular type of labor or delivery.
Birth isn't a test you pass or fail.
Our goal is to support Mom within our scope while encouraging her to build a team of qualified providers around her.
For the Mama Preparing for Birth...
There's something powerful about remembering that your body isn't encountering pregnancy by accident.
God designed the female body with an extraordinary capacity to grow and nurture life.
That doesn't mean pregnancy will always be comfortable.
It doesn't mean birth will always follow the plan.
And it certainly doesn't mean you shouldn't seek appropriate healthcare.
It means you don't have to approach this season believing your body is fragile.
Preparation can come from wisdom instead of fear.
Ask questions.
Learn about your body.
Build your birth team.
Take care of yourself.
Pray over your baby.
And give yourself permission to experience pregnancy without constantly waiting for something to go wrong.
At Kingdom Chiropractic, we're honored to care for moms throughout pregnancy and walk alongside families as they prepare to meet the little person they've been praying for.
And if you've been told:
“Find a Webster chiropractor so they can flip your baby...”
Now you know there's a much bigger conversation to have.
